HER JOURNEY

My Diagnosis
Became My Purpose

Bethlyn’s journey is a story of lived experience, professional responsibility, motherhood, public health and the decision to turn a personal reality into a voice for change.

Her Journey Bethlyn Arthur

Living with Sickle Cell Disease

Living with sickle cell disease introduced Bethlyn to experiences that many people may never fully see: physical pain, uncertainty, difficult healthcare decisions, social misunderstanding and the emotional pressure of being judged through the lens of a medical condition. The journey also revealed resilience, discipline, adaptability, hope and the value of support.

Becoming a Midwife

Bethlyn’s decision to enter healthcare gave her a deeper appreciation of the relationship between patients and professionals. As a midwife, she learned that patients remember whether they were heard, respected, taken seriously and given clear information – not only the treatment they received.

Motherhood and Possibility

Bethlyn’s experience as a mother has deepened her commitment to informed health decisions, maternal wellbeing, responsible education and helping women living with sickle cell disease approach their future with knowledge rather than fear. Family photographs and details about her children require direct approval before publication.

Discovering Advocacy

Bethlyn recognized the gaps between what patients experience, what communities understand, what healthcare systems communicate and what public discussions represent. Advocacy became a way to connect these worlds through education, representation and compassionate action.

Building a Global Voice

Bethlyn’s long-term aim is to contribute meaningfully to international conversations on sickle cell disease, patient engagement, public health, maternal health and healthcare improvement. Recognition is valuable only when it creates access, influence, representation, education and measurable change.

“Sickle cell disease is part of my story, but it is not the limit of my future.”
